According to the National Economic and Social Development Plan Goal 3(1972-1973),Teachers’ College Surat Thani became Suratthani Rajabhat University on 15th June 2004 by King Rama 9 who signed the royal title on 9th June 2004 and it was announced on 14th June 2004. This brought all Teachers’ Colleges became Rajabhat Universities until nowadays. Also, each Rajabhat University has its own independence and legal entity under the budget of Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education.

SRU has its main goal to drive the university in order to serve the local community sustainability and the nation. It produces desirable graduates who can think , can do and can compete potentially. Moreover, in research, it has been accepted to support the knowledge for being the center of art and culture in the local community. Also, it adhere to good governance, participation and will continue its past work from SRU between 2018-2020, consisting of  6 strategic issues as followed:
